Pushkar is considered to be a sacred town for the Hindus. Situated about 11 km northwest of Ajmer, this town has its name even in the Epics and also in Kalidasa's Sakuntalam. Being a pilgrimage for the Hindus the major Pushkar tourist attractions are the Pushkar Lake and the 400 temples that are scattered around the town.

The most famous temple of Pushkar is the Jagat Pita Shri Brahma Mandir. It is the one and only temple in India that is dedicated to Lord Brahma. On the other hand it is said that a dip in the Pushkar Lake on the full moon in the month of Kartik can take away all your sins. There are 52 ghats on the Pushkar Lake and all of them are supposed to be bestowed with healing powers. Pushkar tourist attractions therefore centers mainly on the religious activities of India.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN PUSHKAR
1. Brahma Temple - is one of the main sites of Pushkar Pilgrimage. The legends associated with the temple of Lord Brahma, its uniqueness, its significance as a holy place, add to the beautiful settings of the temple. It is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in India.

Lord Brahma is known as the creator of everything and therefore holds a position of importance among the Hindu deities. One of the most important religious spots in India, Brahma Temple, is respected by the Hindus. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma performed a Yagya on the same spot where the temple stands. All Hindu gods and goddesses participated in the Yagya.

The beautiful structure of Brahma Temple has a red spire that distinguishes it from the other temples in Pushkar. The magnificent Brahma Temple is built with marble and quite distinct from the others. A Hans or Goose, the symbol of Lord Brahma, is seen at the entrance of the temple. The decorations of the temple of Lord Brahma include silver coins. A silver turtle adorns the black and white floor of Brahma Temple.

The temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in Pushkar attracts a large number of pilgrims and tourists. The idol of Brahma is a full image with four hands and four faces. The faces of Brahma looking in the four directions symbolize the supervision of the Lord over the whole creation. The grandeur and magnificence of Brahma Temple separates it from the other temples in Pushkar.

2. Pushkar Lake is one of the major tourist attractions in Rajasthan and features on the itinerary of each and every visitor. Legend has it that the creation of the lake was the result of a lotus falling off from Lord Brahma's hand who was desperately seeking a place to carry out a religious ceremony and a fire sacrifice popularly known as a Yagna. Water immediately gushed forth from the spot and in this way lake came into being.

The Pushkar Lake is considered to be holy by most Hindus and a dip in the lake is held to be very auspicious. A single dip in the pure waters of the lake on the occasion of Karthik Poornima, a full moon day in the Hindu month of Karthik, is no less than carrying out numerous yagnas or sacred ceremonies for several years.
